How to appear in AI answers (ChatGPT and Google)
What GEO is and why it matters now
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is optimizing so AI search engines — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity — cite your content in their answers. The shift is fundamental: Google's AI Overviews already reach over a billion people a month and a growing share of searches produce no click. If the answer is given there and you're not cited, you don't exist.
You used to compete for a spot among ten links. Now you compete to be one of the three sources the AI decides to cite.
Classic SEO vs GEO
It's not one or the other. SEO is still the base: without indexing, speed and authority, AI can't find you. GEO adds a layer: writing in passages that stand alone, answering the exact question people ask, and giving the machine facts that are easy to cite.
7 concrete things to get cited by AI
- Answer the question in the first line. A clear summary at the top (like the box in this post) is what the AI extracts.
- Structure by real questions. Headings that match what people type: "how much does…?", "how to…?".
- Facts with sources. Numbers, examples and verifiable references. AI prioritizes content with concrete facts.
- Schema / structured data. Organization, FAQPage, Article, LocalBusiness. It helps the machine understand what you are.
- Verified reviews. They weigh more and more as a trust signal; ask for them and reply.
- Consistent NAP. Same name, address and phone across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Topical authority. Cover a niche well with several interlinked pieces, rather than touching a thousand topics in passing.
How to measure it
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google (with AI) directly about your category and area, and see if you appear. Register the site in Search Console to see impressions and queries. It's a months-long effort, not days.
At Plexglobe we build websites with these foundations from day one — schema, question-driven content and speed. See what we do or the work.
FAQ
What is GEO?
Optimizing so AI search engines cite your content. It builds on SEO and prioritizes content that answers specific questions, facts with sources, schema, reviews and consistent business data.
Is traditional SEO dead?
It's still the base: without indexing, speed and authority there's no GEO. What changes is that you now also write to be cited in AI answers, which usually show 3 sources instead of 10 links.
How long until it shows?
Months. Those who start now gain an edge because the space isn't saturated yet, but it's built with consistency and trust signals.
